A volunteer's perspective

Welcome to our new website!  I want to kick off our news blog by acknowledging the heart and soul of Picture Lab: our volunteers. Here are some recent thoughts from Dorothy Steding:

This is an amazing program.  I am always so impressed with the art project that the volunteer Curriculum Committee at Carnegie Picture Lab comes up with for the students.  So when your kid comes home from school with a colorfully painted plastic CD case in the next weeks, ask him or her about the Frida Kahlo lesson. I’ve learned so much from the lessons and the kids.  You never know what a little encouragement might do to impact a kid’s life.

The kids love it when the Picture Lab volunteers come.  We were cleaning up and organizing our art cart this afternoon for the next day’s classes when a student from a nearby class asked us whose class we were doing the next day.  She was elated when I gave her a teacher’s name. “Oh great, that’s my class!” Not only do I enjoy learning about these artists and working with the kids, but the rewards are heart-warming.  One student came up to me at the end of class today and gave me a hug.

Can’t beat that for a volunteer reward!

And you can’t beat Picture Lab volunteers for their dedication and enthusiasm! Please check out our “schools” tab to see all the awesome people who bring our program to life!

Artfully yours,

Susan Greene, Executive Director
